Bite sized tips – Cleaning a washing machine

Keeping your washing machine clean is extremely important as a build up of dirt and fluff in the system can lead to blockages and leaking.

Also, there is nothing more off-putting than pulling freshly cleaned laundry from a smelly, mouldy machine.  So what are the best ways to keep your washing machine clean?

  1. Add some white vinegar or lemon juice (about 1-2 cups) to a hot water cycle (with the machine empty obviously). This helps to loosen up any grime that may be found in the pipes.
  2. Take the powder dispenser out and soak it for a while in hot water and washing up detergent. Clean the draw out using a damp cloth, before rinsing the dispenser and replacing.
  3. Wipe around the seal of the door with warm soapy water, making sure you don’t neglect the top rim of the drum also.
  4. Run the machine on another hot cycle, this time with nothing added.
  5. While the wash cycle is running, check the hoses at the rear for any signs of wear or leaking.  If your machine is over 4 years old and you have never replaced the original hoses, then now may be the time to consider it before a disaster occurs and your utility room is flooded.
  6. Polish the outside of your machine with a little vinegar on a damp cloth to remove those last bits of grease and grime.

Your washing machine should now be looking better than ever and working well too.
